:: Theories ::

Introduction to sociology. [The word ‘introduction’ may make this subject seems easy, but actually it is the other way round. Introductory subject means you are to cover and study the whole issues in it, with no concentration field at all. ]

Today’s lecture is regarding the structural functionalism and conflict theory, concerning on each division’s view towards the society. How I wish I can express the remarkably-enjoyable moment I’ve spent for today’s lecture! I can hardly tell it verbally.

For a while, I sort of possessing the notion that how unfortunate we are to be given the chance to study a certain subject in just 3months ++, and together with other 5-6 subjects. The time constrain often forces us to learn unenthusiastically. At the same time, the intention will not be for the sake of the knowledge itself, instead to catch up with the syllabus as well as to translate understandings into words, rather than into actions. We don’t have enough time to delve deeper into what we are studying. In short, I might say that some students are theoretically excellent yet practically blind. Anyhow, what to do… Learning simply a subject for the whole semester promises you to stay much much longer in the university, and that’s what I’m afraid of!

Off with that thinking.

Now let me clarify the definition of the theories first.

Structural functionalism: A framework for building theory that envisions society as a complex system whose part works together to promote solidarity and stability, as well as equilibrium (balance). It views the society horizontally.

Conflict theory: A framework for building theory that envisions society as an arena that generates conflict and change, as well as fight. It views the society vertically.

In a simpler explanation,

* Structural functionalism views the society as a very good and nice society.
* Conflict theory views the society as an inequality and often struggle.

Definitely the discussion on this topic is longer and more complex. That’s why I will just provide two issues as examples, in order to show how these two theories work differently.

1st Issue: We treat the doctors and garbage collectors obviously in a totally different manner, as well as they were given highly different remunerations (salary) although their jobs are almost similar; dealing with sickening and nauseating stuffs.

Structural functionalists will say: “This is what we call functional. [Means there’s no problem at all]. It takes enormously uphill struggle for a person who intends to be a doctor. He sacrifices 5 to 6 years studying [sometimes longer], without being paid, learning the difficult subjects, and finally serves the nation. That’s why the society should reward and acknowledge him. On the other hand, garbage collector is a person who can be trained merely within a week. He didn’t sacrifice as much as the doctor.”

Conflict theorists will say: “This is not okay! Garbage collector also serves the nation very much. You see, even the Prime Minister cannot live properly without him.” J

2nd issue: Crime

Structural functionalists will say: “Hmmm, crime might be bad, but it is also functional. Without crime, there will be no police, court, prisons and so on so forth”. Thus, crime is okay. J [Since it seems like contributing in maintaining the society institution.]

Whereas, the conflict theorists will say: “Crimes always happen because the upper class takes too much from the lower class, making them feel oppressed and are forced to commit crimes such as stealing and killing.”

It is clear that in structural functionalism, every action [in the society] is okay, nice and attached with no problem at all. [Note: they don’t like to talk about changes] On the other hand, in conflict theory, most actions are likely to motivate fights and struggles.

So what do you think, which one is correct and which one is wrong?

Or, maybe you think both are wrong…? Well, you are free to make judgments.

Extra notes:

Some of the structural functionalists are Emile Durkheim, August Comte, and Robert K. Merton.

Some of the conflict theorists are Karl Marx and Max Weber.

:: Bagaimana caranya? ::

Lagi tentang Tadwin Sunnah.

Kedua: Mengulang-ulang hadith sehingga 3kali.

Antaranya,
a) Memulakan dengan persoalan. Contoh:

b) Menyampaikan mubasharatan (serta-merta tanpa bertanya soalan dll.) Contoh:

"Ya man tadaa'i bi hubbirrasul, aina anta min sunnatihi?"

:: 3 syarat ::

Terdapat 3 syarat utama untuk menjadikan sesuatu madah atau subjek itu mudah untuk dipelihara juga dihafaz, iaitu;

Tullaab azkiyaa' itu: Para sahabat R.A

Oleh kerana itulah sehingga hari ini sunnah itu tetap terjaga/mahfuz. Satu perkara yang penting untuk kita ketahui, jika ditanyakan, ALLAH ada memberi jaminan bahawa Alquran itu akan terpelihara untuk selama-lamanya;

* Firman ALLAH:

:: To Arsenal ::

It's a letter from a girl to Arsenal FC

:: A Letter ::

A Letter from a Muslim Girl to Her Christian Parents.

Hello Mami and Papi,

I don't know how else to approach you in order to explain my reasoning behind my life changing decision and have you listen and understand at the same time.

Since I can long remember I have not be a strong believer of Christianity, there was a lot that did not make sense to me, for example, why I have to beg for forgiveness to a priest? Why I have to pray to saints and not straight to God, why is Jesus the SON of God, why are their SOO many versions of the bible?

The religion became a fascination to me, and I truly wanted to know more. I purchased a few books in the UK and read some pamphlets on the religion. I did not make any decisions but I continued to read and become more familiar to Islam.

Islam began making sense to me, the idea that we pray only to Allah, that we ask Allah for help and for forgive us, how a book (the Quran) that was written thousands of years ago remains unchanged as of today (there are different translations but no different versions) . Also how a book that was written years ago managed to explain scientific situations that was only discovered by man kind only a couple of year ago. Or how the Quran has managed to explains how babies develop in the womb? How would anyone thousands of years ago know this and in such detail? Especially since scientist discovered the explanation of these situations less that 100 years ago?? How can we explain those wonders of the book?

Also how can I deny the holy book when it has been so clear in explaining advanced technology, how the day turns into the night, the creation of human beings by water (as we know scientifically to be known that we came from cells) layers of heaven (which we describe now in scientific terms as the atmospheric levels?). Furthermore, the beginning of the universe and the movement of tectonic plates (there are numerous other examples of the science behind the Quran).

What also has touched me is that Islam believes in ALL THE PROPHETS - JESUS MOSES DAVID ABRAHAM AND MOHAMMAD (pbuh) they all coexist in he Quran, the Quran also tells us that we must respect ALL religions. Mami and Papi, I can not explain how many times I have made my self clear to you of what I believed in, I could not have given myself away anymore! Every time I spoke hours and hours on end about Islam, and how I knew so much.

Also I began of interacting more with Muslim friends; I felt that they would be able to give me a clear explanation of Islam. Also Islam played a major part in self respect, and it helped my appreciate my self more, and realize that I should stay away from harmful situation such as drinking, smoking, going out with people that only meant trouble. I told you what my friends were like, they were heading the wrong direction, and I did not want to be in that direction and believing in Islam made it easier for me to walk away from the powers of shaytaan and do better.

Also Islam was and has been the reason for my success in school. I have placed my mind in my studies instead of going out all the time as my old friends did, and trust me you would not like me to be like them, because if I had been than you would have every single reason to think I was a bad person, that I was irresponsible and that I was a disgrace to the family.
After almost one year of studying Islam I had no doubt in my mind that it was not the right religion.

I was prepared to become a Sunni Muslim. In early June 2006 I attended the mosque in Westbury NY to ask further questions about Islam and after speaking to a sister and the imam of the mosque I knew that it was time to make the right decision. I did shahada around 2 weeks later which is the Islamic creed; it means to testify or to bear witness in Arabic, the declaration of the belief. I stated in front of 80- 100 Muslims "ash hadu anla ilaha illallah, wa ash hadu anla Mohammad roosul Allah" which translates to "I believe in one and only God and Mohammad is his messenger" It was such a beautiful experience.

I had been accepted into the Islam. I was welcomed by every single Muslim at the mosque with open arms, I felt too special, it felt so right, I knew I had made the best decision in my life, and it was something that was going to bring positive sides of me. It is so hard to explain the rush, and the emotional and faith satisfaction that I had at that moment, but I knew there was something wrong, that I was not able to celebrate my happiness with the people in my life that I loved the most, the meant to most to me, and that was you and papi. The moment was wonderful but not complete. I really wish you could have been as proud of me as I was for myself.

It hurt so much to think and feel that my biggest challenge would be to openly tell you about me and Islam, about me and my faith, about me and my happiness. I know that you both want the best for me, you want me to be happy and you want me to be responsible, and you want me to be independent and make the RIGHT decisions. I have done the right decision, and I made it all by myself, and I read about Islam all by myself, I discovered Islam in me all by myself, IT WAS ME who made every decision from the point were I began in the Islamic interest to the point where I am now.

I can't lie to you and tell you I had no influences because how else would I have been influenced by wanting to know more about Islam? Well from observing other people. How do we know as humans whether eating a chocolate cake taste good or not? We taste it, we try others to compare and then we make a final decision and if we like it we continue to eat if we don't then we disregard it.

Mami and Papi, I know I might seem weak sometimes in certain situations, and I know I display signs of vulnerability , but converting into Islam was decided by me, its hard and it hurts to think that all this studying, research of Islam and me converting has been credited to someone else, but at the end of the day the only one that knows the truth is God and it is to him that I will be standing in front of on the day of Judgment, and it is him that knows everything.
It is stated in the Quran that all the prophets were messengers of God, they all came to spread the news and religion of God, but that they all came in their own time, and that Mohammad (pbuh) was the last messenger of God.

I know my word is hard to believe after the incidents these past two days, but there is nothing more that I can do to prove to both of you when it comes to the decisions that I made about Islam.

And most importantly I want you both to understand that it is virtually impossible to explain ALL of my reasoning behind my belief in Islam, this email is not even 1/100th of it all, I have spent hours and hours and hours speaking to others about my feeling towards Islam, and I wish and pray to Allah that one day I will be able to express everything I feel about Islam with both of you.

I still remain to be the daughter that you had almost 21 years ago, it has not changed the way I feel about you, you still are the most important people in my life, I love you both more than anything, I just have a different belief and its one which will bring you no shame, it will not physically hurt you, and I will not patronize our relationship.

I love you both very much and I only pray for the best,

Carolina Amirah DeFonseca

:: WB ::

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Following are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1.He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late! Things were very cheap that time Encourage your children to invest.

2.He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers. One could have bought many things with little savings. Encourage your children to start some kind of business.

3.He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha , that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence. Don't buy more than what you "really need" and encourage your children to do and think the same.

4.He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.
You are what you are.

5.He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.
Always think how you can accomplish things economically.

6.His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. Assign the right people to the right jobs.

7.He has given his CEO's only two rules:
Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money.
Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.
Set goals and make sure people focus on them.

8.He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television. Don't try to show off, just be your self and do what you enjoy doing.

9.Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.

His advice to young people:

"Stay away from credit cards (bank loans) and invest in yourself and Remember:

A.Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.
B.Live your life as simple as you are.
C.Don't do what others say, just listen them, but do what you feel good.
D.Don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which you feel comfortable.
E.Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them who really in need rather.
F.After all it's your life then why give chance to others to rule our life."

:: Water for a civilization ::

At home. But not mine. It's hers. (( She, who had dozed off hours ago although the real plan is to 'burn the midnight' oil till it's no longer night. ^^,)) At last, this friday (today?!) will be the beginning of the not-in-the-semester's-schedule holiday due to the 'water and tanks' problem. Got no idea when it will reach to its end. Glad that my block is -till this very moment, i guess- still among the unaffected blocks. Nevertheless, i'm among those who took the immediate-action right after hearing the official announcement made by MRC this evening. Afraid that tomorrow might not be the same as today. Also worried that SYABAS will be the most wanted and most waited guest!

Truly, water is the main source for human being to continue their day-to-day lives smoothly, regardless of their positions. People from all walks of life are in need of it. An established and undeniable fact, in deed. I did ask some friends, had they been given the chance to choose among these two situations, which one would be their choice, non-ironed clothes or unbathed body?(although it is not a proper english word, u know what i mean). Definitely majority of us will choose the first one. Body is more important than clothes, anyway. But optimistically said, i would have choose to not to be in the state of having to choose. Sorry for using the confusing + broken english!

In surah al anbiyaa' verse 30, ALLAH says:

Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then We parted them, and we made every living thing of water ? Will they not then believe ? (anbiyaa' : 30)

Pertaining to the above words (in bold), a modern mufassir Muhammad Asad said:

The statement that God “made out of water every living thing” expresses
most concisely a truth that is nowadays universally accepted by science. It has
a threefold meaning: (1) Water – and, specifically, the sea – was the
environment within which the prototype of all living matter originated; (2)
among all the innumerable – existing or conceivable – liquids, only water has
the peculiar properties necessary for the emergence and development of life; and
(3) the protoplasm, which is the physical basis of every living cell – whether
in plants or in animals – and represents the only form of matter in which the
phenomenon of life are manifested, consists overwhelmingly of water and is,
thus, utterly dependent on it. Read together with the preceding statement, which
alludes to the unitary origin of the physical universe, the emergence of life
from and within an equally unitary element points to the existence of a unitary
plan underlying all creation and, hence, to the existence and oneness of the
Creator.
Got another fascinating point regarding the importance of water. During one of history lessons last semester, Prof Ghassan did ask us, why do you think the Chinese civilization flourished for a very long period of time, compared to other civilizations? Yeah, you see that there were dynasty after dynasty existed, taking their turn and prospering in its own numerous achievements. About the answer, none of us got the right idea. At last, prof Ghassan -after spending too much time waiting for the correct answer- he said that it's all because of its very large numbers of rivers and sea. Subhaanallah. A bountiful bless from HIM, giving us water, to purify ourselves, as drinks, and as well as to build civilizations!

:: Not all Jews are Zionists ::

An article from ustaz Maszlee Malik.

"Jahannam Yahudi! Jahannam Yahudi Laknatullah! Mampus Yahudi!"

Those were amongts the swears being loudly uttered by the demonstrators in any rallies organised in Malaysia in condemning Israel and showing solidarity towards the Palestinians. For some parties, Jews are equal to Zionists, Judaism is equal to Zionism, Jewish nation is equal to Israel.

I wouldn't agree much with such generalisation. The fact that what is happening in Gaza, and Palestine as a whole has nothing to do with the Jewish people as a nation nor the Judaism as a religion. Since the day Herzl (the founder of World Zionist Organisation) declared the idea of Erez Yisrael (Israeli state) until today, thousands of Jews, from the lay people to intellectuals, politicians and thinkers strongly diagreed and oppossed the idea and the ideology for whatever reasons they adherent to.

If the Jewish people are all Zionists, What have we to say about people like Alan Hart, Ilan Pappe, Norman Finkelstein, Muhammad Asad, Mariam Jameelah, or Jewish organisations like Satmar and Naturei Karta who repeatedly calling for the inhilation of the Israeli state for it is against the teaching of Torah and Talmud?Are not they all Jews?Or do we want to agree with the Zionists' label against those good hearted people as 'Self-hating Jews'?

For those who still insist to curse or swear the 'Yahudi' as a nation, I am afraid this will lead to the Medieval Christian's and Europeans' creed that created the centuries of pogrom and discrimination towards the Jewish people, hence resulted to the butchery crime of Holocaust. The Medieval Europeans, specifically pre-protestant period and the Catholics later on adamantly believed that Jewish people were the murderers of Jesus.

Hence they are entitled to all the presecutions. Had not the Protestants and in specific, the Millenists promulgated the belief of Apocalypse, and had not Hitler slaughtered the non-Zionist Jews in Europe, the Jewish people should continue living in difficulties in Europe. As Uri Avnery used to mention in his writing criticising Pope Benedict's hatred remark on the Muslims, the Jewish people have never experienced more security and prospherity in Europe as they were in Islamic Andalusia.

When the inquisition of the Christian Spain chased the Jewish people from the Iberian Peninsular, it was the Ottoman Empire in Turkey who sheltered them. Muslim lands were safe heaven for the Jewish people when their brethens in Europe were experiencing discrimination, execution and massacres.Furthermore, Jewish people along with the Christians were regarded as 'Ahl al-Kitab' or the people of the book.

Muslims are allowed to eat their slaughter and to marry their women. They even enjoy lot of previleges during the Islamic empires reigns. The condemns and critiques on the Jewish people in al-Quran was mentioned as part of the history which even the Old Testament (or Torah according to the Judaism) also shared lot of says. While some verses and even Hadiths cursing the Jews were mentioned in contexts, which amongts them were the acts of treason by the Jewish tribes (Bani Nadhir, Bani Qurayzar, Bani Qaynuqa') settling in Medina during that period and those critiques were not dedicated to the Jewish as a nation.

In sum, while confronting the inhumane Israeli agressions not only in Gaza, but every single inch of the occupied land, we should not neglect the justice. The stereotype of some anti-Islam parties in generalising all Muslims as terrorist, and the Islamic teaching as the doctrine of terror must be avoided by the Muslims in giving their judgement to the Jewish people.

As I strongly oppose those who embrace the idea that 'Muslims are terrorists', I am also against those who blatantly chanting 'Jahannam Yahudi'...As for the Zionists, they are not necessary to be Jews; the Christian Zionists in the USA and all over Europe are not to be forgotten. Perhaps their number is outnumbering the Jewish Zionists in Israel. However, the worst amongst them are the cold-hearted Muslim Zionists who have the guts to condone what their Zionist comrades committed to their Muslim brethens in Palestine.

:: We Will Not Go Down ::

This is a song of hope for the Palestinians in Gaza, composed and performed by Michael Heart (www.michaelheart.com)

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they’re dead or alive

They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die

We will not go down
In Gaza tonight
Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night

While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who’s wrong or right
But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die

We will not go down
In Gaza tonight
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight

You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight

We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

:: Easy than riding a bicycle ::

Malahan ‘Islamic ways is easy than riding a bicycle!’

Apa-apalah!

:: 10 Steps ::

Got a pamphlet when I attended the “GAZA Under Fire” program. It was held last weekend, by al Aqsa Friends’ Society.A real-throng. The auditorium’s seats were filled by almost international students, making me feel like I was the one who study in their country! Malaysians were nowhere to be found around me. Perhaps they were sitting at the above side.

Focusing on the pamphlet distributed. 10 steps to support Gaza were stated there. Let me share them with you.

1. Follow up the news about what is happening in Gaza. The number of shuhadaa’, injured people, the volume of destruction, etc.
2. Download pictures of the massacre and distribute to your friends via print outs, e-mails, on the mobile.
3. Follow up on the achievements of the Palestinian resistance heroes in Gaza. What victory they achieve everyday, how many soldiers they kill, how many tanks they destroy.
4. Call the people of Gaza. Tell them where you from, and share with them your feelings of sympathy and support and your confidence that they will win this war. You can call this number: 009708285xxxx. Replace the x’s with any number. (I haven’t tried this yet)
5. Paste pictures of Gaza on your notebooks, in your room, PC desktops.
6. Participate in as much activities about Gaza as you can. Talks, gatherings, seminars.
7. Organize activities on what is happening in Gaza in your neighborhood, in your mahallah, surau, etc.
8. Make this the most important topic of your discussions among your friends. Make it the first thing after greeting the people you meet, tell them or ask about.
9. BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT Israeli & American products.
10. Remember them in your doa and prayers.

IT IS THE WAR BETWEEN US AND THEM. IT IS A REAL SHAME IF YOU NEVER CARE TO BE AWARE.

Oo Israel, you can kill our bodies over and over, but you can never kill the spirits within us!

And the resistance continues….

:: Temuramah bersama Ust Maszlee ::

Sasaran mereka bukan hanya HAMAS, tetapi rakyat Gaza, rakyat Palestin kesemuanya. HAMAS adalah suara rakyat Palestin. Melenyapkan HAMAS bererti melenyapkan rakyat Palestin keseluruhannya.

:: Israel's Message ::

The message the outlawed Zionist state of Israel is sending to the world and international leaders through this barbaric and sadist attack on Gaza is clear: “Do not ever think of reconciling with the Muslim and Arab world. This will never happen on our account.”

With a lot of naïve optimism roaming in America and the international arena for change after the election of Obama, many seriously thought that president-elect is capable as an individual, apart from the system he serves, of bringing change to the world and remedying the damage caused by the previous administration to the US foreign policy. They are still dreaming, and Israel wanted to make sure this dream never comes true.
These vicious attacks can never be justified on any human level. The only justification for this to Israel, is to make sure the relations between the US and the Muslim world of 1.3 billion people, and the Arab world in particular, remains severed. US interests with one fifth of humanity seems to be irrelevant to Israel when it comes to its own interests with the US.

It was that simple and they succeeded. Attack the innocent people in Gaza on a pretext of Hamas control of the area (assuming international tacit approval of ousting Hamas from power). The Muslim and Arab world will be enraged on the public level, embarrassed on an official level, and will start looking up for the CHANGE the president-elect promised. The US feels (or does not feel) embarrassed, but still supports its so called only democratic ally in the region because it is the beacon of democracy and the free world, and to heck with the rest of the world. (Did I mention that the Palestinian people, even if you do not support their choice, also democratically elected Hamas earlier before the drama started?)

Muslims and Arabs do not see any CHANGE or any justice coming any time soon, even before Obama takes office (read his and his democratic party’s statements again), so they go back to the same camp of disgruntled people. This will ensure that hopes for reconciliation with the Muslim and Arab world do not happen during the term of any president any time soon.

It seems that Israel is seriously in doubt of its own legitimacy after all these years, and any reconciliation between the US and the Muslim and Arab world on this subject will hurt Israel on political and economical levels. It might bring real justice to the Palestinians. Israel is thriving politically on the American Jewish lobbying for its cause and survival, which no American politician dares to criticize without paying hefty political and career damage. In addition, economically, Israel lives off the annual billions of US taxpaying dollars in the form of US aid, long-term loans and evangelical good-well charities. All of this might come to an end if there is no need for an unconditional support to poor state of Israel.

The message is clear: “Do not even think of reconciling with them.” The ties and relations have to remain severed. Message came through, and we are back to square one.

“The Unbelievers spend their wealth to hinder (men) from the path of Allah, and so will they continue to spend; but in the end they will have (only) regrets and sighs; at length they will be overcome: and the Unbelievers will be gathered together to Hell.” Al-Anfaal 8:36

:: GAZA Islamic Uni was bombed ::

Last year, a large majority of British academics raised the issue of potentially boycotting Israeli universities. This ‘tactic’ did not just appear out of the blue, but rather had been discussed for a number of years before this throughout British academic circles. The boycott would serve as their symbolic act of protest against what they viewed as clear apartheid-like policies that discriminated against Israeli-Arabs and Palestinians, not just in the academic arena, but in all walks of life. Not surprisingly, American universities reacted quite harshly. Amidst accusations of ‘anti-Semitism’, over 450 presidents of various American Universities, and thousands upon thousands of professors, denounced their British counterparts and claimed that this was an assault on the very foundations of academic freedom.

Fast forward to the present. In this last week, Israel viciously bombed the largest University in Gaza, in six SEPARATE raids, and destroyed a number of facilities, including the Ladies Building, where female students attended classes. Although the university is named the ‘Islamic University,’ it teaches both religious and secular sciences, serving over twenty-thousand students, most of whom are female. It has over ten departments, including engineering, medicine, science, art, and nursing. It was established over thirty years ago, has graduated tens of thousands of students, and is recognized as the largest and most accessible institute of higher learning in Gaza.

All of this meant little to the state of Israel.

Israel justified the attacks by claiming that the Gaza University was merely a front for a “… research and development center of Hamas weapons.” But leaving aside the veracity of this claim for a moment, is there any modern research facility in the world that does not do research on aspects that could be used for military purposes? And how many of our own American universities directly receive aid from the government, and from private corporations, and use their intellectual resources for the political and military benefit of the country. Institutions of higher learning are supposed to serve the needs of their countries and are also supposed to be a place where diverse views are debated. The indiscriminate bombing of this university simply cannot be justified.

As if bombing the university was not enough, yesterday Israel succeeded in assassinating a professor of the University, Dr. Nizar Rayyan. Dr. Nizar was a professor of Hadith Studies at the Islamic Faculty, and had studied in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Sudan. He had been a volunteer Imam and khatib at a major Masjid in Gaza since 1985, and had been imprisoned and tortured numerous times (for a total of almost four years of his life). He was targeted because he was a ‘senior figure in Hamas’.

The Israelis were so terrified of this one man, who probably weighed around two hundred pounds, that they felt the need to drop a two thousand pound bomb on the apartment complex where he lived, killing him and eighteen other members of his family, including nine of his children. Men, women and children, murdered with unchecked savagery.

Dr. Nizar was clearly an advocate of military aggression against Israel, and also considered suicide bombings as a legitimate means of attack – a method that most other Muslim theologians and jurists (including myself) disapprove of. But regardless of what one thinks of the legitimacy of suicide attacks, such brutal violence against a professor and his entire family and innocent neighbors will undoubtedly generate more violence. International law does not allow extrajudicial assassinations, nor the permissibility of associated “collateral damage”. If the Israelis believed that Dr. Nizar was a terrorist, and that an assassination was justified, without trial, along with his innocent family and hapless neighbors, how then would they respond if someone asked them that is exactly the same logic with which Palestinian bombers view their own “innocent” targets?
The speed and enthusiasm with which certain American universities and academics jumped to attack the proposed British boycott of Israeli universities was a spectacle to witness. They claimed they were championing academic freedom.

I wonder where these same universities and academics are now, when an entire University is bombed, its facilities destroyed, and professors assassinated? The only reasonable answer seems to be that in the eyes of these academics, Palestinians don’t really deserve the same freedoms as Israelis do. In other words, some freedoms are just more sacred than others.

:: Membalas Cinta ::

Aku tercari-cari sinar cahayaMU..

Aku menjawab, “Tidak, setiap hari aku bersolat. Setiap hari akau berdoa sebelum tidur, selepas makan… setiap waktu. Sebagai tanda bahawa hari-hariku bukan hanya dipenuhi dunia.”

Sungguhkah begitu?

Wahai diri… mengapa engkau terlalu mengejar dunia .

Firman ALLAH dalam surah alfajr: 16 yang bermaksud;

Adapun bila Tuhannya mengujinya lalu membatasi rezekinya Maka dia berkata: "Tuhanku menghinaku"

:: Personal vs Societal ::

Yesterday’s lecture was really an attention-grabbing one (I think). Especially because the venue of the class already changed to a normal class, making the gap between me and madam was only a few inches. I love it when the lecturers are spreading their words of wisdom and beautiful lectures exactly in front of me. For the past two weeks, my sociology class was stated in the slip as ‘will-be-having-the-lectures’ in Soca Lab. Urgh, it’s not a class. It’s a lab, a long yet narrow so-called class. It was hard for madam to just remain delivering the lessons by standing in front of the class since the ‘back-benches’ might having problem in earshot her words clearly. Due to this reason, for a moment or two, madam was forced to walk to the center of the class, ‘leaving’ me a bit far. I dislike that. I have to turn around my head almost the whole period of the lesson. It’s a tiresome 50 minutes for me.

However, all praises be to ALLAH. Yesterday’s was the beginning of the real excitement. We are now being placed in a proper and better venue to be spent there, thrice in a week. Being given the chance to learn about sociology is a blessing, really. It helps you to understand your ‘location’ in the society, how the society is giving a great impact to your life, plus you also will be exposed about other societies in this world, with their peculiarities, and of course, lots and lots more. More weeks left for me to grab this chance and enjoy learning all those excitements and knowledge.

For yesterday, we were taught about the theory of sociological imagination. A theory grounded by C. Wright Mills. It is a theory about an awareness of the relationship between an individual and the widen society. He stated that the society is highly potent and intoxicating in influencing your decision. Are we really aware of it? Let me give you and example. Our society (in Malaysia) tells that women are pretty in all colors-what to do- but there are certain colors which are strictly considered as women’s colors. For instant, a striking pink color. So, when a guy is choosing his t-shirt in a mall, he would undoubtedly think about others’ perspective towards him as well. He can’t choose a striking pink t-shirt, although he might be the one who are –fortunately- fated as a guy who likes pink. “It’s only for women”, the society said that. Then, it is proved that even in buying your own things; you are not making the decision on your own, the society has a share there. So it’s also a societal decision-making rather than solely personal.

The second example, committing suicide is regarded as a highly personal action. However, is it truly personal? Is there really a sane person who will suddenly kill him/herself right after he/she woke up from sleep, without any reasons? Absolutely the answer is no. The society is the entity which is forcing someone to commit suicide. Take one case, a student in a leading country in this world is committing suicide just because he failed to enter a prominent university, and surprisingly it is not something weird. Why? Because the society in that particular country said, it is better for you to die than to continue living in this world but being humiliated. It is obvious that the society really has a hand in shaping your life.

There are more examples given by madam yesterday but I think it’s enough for us to understand how society –in almost time- is making the decision for us. That’s why it is very vital for us, to choose a very good society in order to lead this life blissfully. However, interestingly said, isn’t it better for us, if in making any decision in our lives, we let Islam to ‘decide’ it for us as well? For example in the case of buying clothes, we are free to choose but it must be in accordance to the guard lines given by ALLAH. As women, when we are buying our stuffs, especially outfits, do we ‘allow’ the Islamic Law to share its views in producing our firm decision? Do we really consider which attire is allowed or not allowed, or which attire will contribute points of sins into our accounts and so on…? A thing to be ponders upon. :)
